Waiting for Godot - Set Design

Waiting for Godot in a Classical Theater

The idea is to create a big sculptural tree, however, the structure is absurd, giving this felling to the play. We don't have the complete trunk. The actors can appear trough the tree, can stay behind or in front of.  Vladimir and Stragon have the tree around them, not on their sight. They have to look up, to search, to do something to see the tree.

Waiting for Godot in a Black Box Theater

The 3 diferent places for the audience will have 3 diferents experiences about the play. In one, we will have the road, the moon, the light, th HOPE. In the oposite side will be the dark, no road, no hope; and, in the midlle we can see the both sides, the contrast, the two ways.

Waiting for Godot in a School

The floor will be a big paper and the tree is a papercutting coming out from the ground. The space without paper is like the shadow of the tree. The actors can sit and walk trough the crumpled paper.

Waiting for Godot in a big Circus

The audience are around the play, and can see the floor. Now, the sky is on the floor, the moon on the earth, and a big stair represents the road, the Godot coming from the sky, like a confusion and absurd.

Waiting for Godot in a site in the City (Budapest)

The site is a vacant lot surrounded by buildings. The abandoned place, with few spaces of grass and with some waste around, transmit the feeling of the END. Now, the point is the play in the city. The tree is an art nouveu lamp. the moon is a TV, and Vladimir and Estragon have a sofa, the sofa of INERTIA.

Waiting for Godot is a famous play writed by Samuel Beckket.  The play happen with 3 important elements: the tree, the road and the moon; is about our fellings, our acts, our way of life.

These images are part of a stage design work that I did in my internship at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, with Prof. Piroska É. Kiss. The proposal was to create 5 diferents scenarys for the play Waiting for Godot, in 5 diferent places: Classical Theater, Black box theater, School, big Circus and a site in the city.
